Play Therapy is used to address a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and social difficulties. Consequently, Child-Centered Play Therapists (CCPTs) play a crucial role in children's emotional well-being and development. The module will explore the dual aspects of a CCPT, both as a person and as a professional.

Module PT 102 introduces students to the field of play therapy, focusing on the personal qualities of play therapists, the objectives of play therapy, and practical application in Chinese culture.

I. Child-centered play therapy: Building self-concept

  1. Participants will learn to implement play therapy interventions, encouraging children to explore and express their feelings.

  2. Participants will recognize the importance of the child's autonomy in the therapeutic process.

  3. Participants will apply the three core conditions that convey acceptance and recognition of the child's emotions and experiences.

  4. Participants will apply the skill of actively listening to children's verbal and non-verbal expressions.

  5. Participants will demonstrate the ability to create a non-judgmental and accepting environment for children during play therapy sessions.

 

II. Child-centered Play therapist as a person and a professional

  1. Participants will study the professional abilities of play therapists

  2. Participants will reflect on their personal qualities as professional play therapists.

  3. Participants will practice accepting and valuing the child's expressions without imposing personal judgments.

  4. Participants will identify potential challenges to maintaining the core conditions and explore ways to address them.

  5. Participants will review the professional standards which are the priority to stay informed about the latest research and therapeutic modalities.

 

III. Child-centered play therapy: Application in Chinese culture

  1. Participants will review the contemporary global cultural philosophies.

  2. Participants will study the applications of counselling concepts in Chinese culture.

  3. Participants will identify the importance of cultural sensitivity

  4. Participants will learn to provide parental training to better support and understand the child's development in play therapy.

  5. Participants will discuss ways to adapt CCPT to diverse cultural contexts and belief systems.

 

IV. Child-centered play therapy: The objectives of play therapy 

  1. Participants will acquire play therapy techniques suitable for various age groups and presenting issues.

  2. Participants will apply CCPT principles to different settings, including schools, clinics, and community organizations.

  3. Participants will learn the role of Unconditional Positive Regard, Empathy, and Genuineness in facilitating positive changes in a child's emotional well-being.

  4. Participants will empower children to make choices and decisions during play therapy.

  5. Participants will use play as a tool for the child to experience exploration in the playroom.

Instructors:

​Dr. Tom Yuen (PH.D., Registered Psychologist, RPT-S™)

Dr. Tom Yuen is a scholar in counselling education. He possesses a wealth of expertise and is proficient in Chinese and English. He has taught psychotherapy and play therapy in countries like the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong. In recent years, he has dedicated himself to passing down the principles of play therapy to the next generation, presenting it in its true essence through Cantonese.

Ms. Rachel Leung (RSW, RPT-S™)

Rachel is a registered play therapist with years of professional experience. She is dedicated to providing play therapy support for children helping them address emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues. Rachel has extensive knowledge and skills, focusing on creating a safe and supportive environment for children to express themselves through play, problem-solve, and develop healthy coping strategies. She specializes in trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, autism spectrum disorder, grief, and family problems. Rachel is also a clinical mentor, mentoring and training a new generation of play therapists. With an individualized approach and professional techniques, Rachel offers tailored therapy for each child, assisting them in achieving holistic development and psychological well-being.

Remarks:

  • Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.

  • To request a refund for registration cancellation, please send a written request to PCPT at info@pcpt.ca. PCPT retains the right to cancel this training in the event of unexpected circumstances. If such a situation arises, PCPT will make efforts to inform registered participants before the event and will provide refunds for all registration, workshop, and continuing education fees. It's important to note that PCPT's liability is restricted to refunding these fees in all cases.
