The Child-Centered Play Therapy: Clinical Skills course focuses on the practical application of the TREE model (Tracking, Reflecting, Encouragement, Enlarging the Meaning) and Limit Setting in child-centered play therapy. Participants will learn how to effectively utilize these essential clinical skills to support the therapeutic process and promote healing and growth in children. Through interactive exercises, role-plays, and case discussions, participants will develop proficiency in implementing the TREE model and gain confidence in their ability to facilitate meaningful play therapy sessions.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively apply the TREE model and limit setting in child-centered play therapy. They will be able to utilize tracking, reflecting, encouragement, enlarging the meaning, and limit setting techniques to create a supportive therapeutic environment and facilitate meaningful change in children.

Course Objectives:

I. Understand the core components of the TREE model

  1. Define and explain each component of the TREE model (Tracking, Reflecting, Encouragement, Enlarging the Meaning).

  2. Explore the theoretical foundations and research supporting the use of these clinical skills in child-centered play therapy.

  3. Identify the specific goals and purposes of each component within the therapeutic context.


II. Apply tracking skills in child-centered play therapy

  1. Demonstrate the ability to observe and track a child's play behaviors, emotions, and verbalizations during play therapy sessions.

  2. Utilize tracking techniques to accurately reflect and validate the child's experiences and emotions.

  3. Identify and address any challenges or barriers that may arise when implementing tracking skills.


III. Master reflection skills in child-centered play therapy

  1. Develop proficiency in reflecting the child's play themes, feelings, and inner experiences.

  2. Utilize reflective statements to deepen the child's self-awareness and understanding.

  3. Tailor reflections to meet the unique needs and developmental level of each child.


IV. Utilize encouragement and enlarging the meaning techniques

  1. Apply encouragement techniques to support the child's exploration, creativity, and self-esteem during play therapy.

  2. Employ enlarging the meaning techniques to help the child gain insight and make connections between their play and real-life experiences.

  3. Adapt encouragement and enlarging the meaning strategies to fit the cultural and individual context of the child.


V. Implement limit setting in child-centered play therapy

  1. Understand the importance of setting appropriate limits and boundaries in the play therapy process.

  2. Explore different strategies for establishing and maintaining limits during play therapy sessions.

  3. Address any challenges or resistance that may arise when implementing limit setting techniques.

Instructors:

​Dr. Tom Yuen (PH.D., Registered Psychologist, RPT-S™)

Dr. Tom Yuen is a scholar in counselling education. He possesses a wealth of expertise and is proficient in Chinese and English. He has taught psychotherapy and play therapy in countries like the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong. In recent years, he has dedicated himself to passing down the principles of play therapy to the next generation, presenting it in its true essence through Cantonese.

  • Play therapy credit may be awarded to graduate students enrolled in a graduate mental health program or individuals who hold a graduate mental health degree in counselling, marriage and family therapy, psychiatry, psychology, or social work.

  • To request a refund for registration cancellation, please send a written request to PCPT at info@pcpt.ca. PCPT retains the right to cancel this training in the event of unexpected circumstances.
